Air purifiers have been one of Dyson’s most popular products since first launching back in 2015 – but customers have always wanted one thing: A bigger size.
The British technology firm has listened to our pleas, unveiling a new air purifier that is significantly larger than the brand’s previous models which delivers double the airflow.
However there’s one issue that comes hand-in-hand with propelling more air around a bigger room – noise. And our homes have already got enough of that.
Dyson, which proudly declares solving problems is one of its biggest motivators, didn’t want to release a product that solves one issue but creates another.
So its team of engineers set to work, completely ditching previous designs and developing a new energy-efficient, low-pressure air delivery system using cone aerodynamics.
The result was the new Dyson Big+Quiet Formaldehyde, the brand’s “quietest yet most powerful purifier”.
“Our ethos of what makes a good purifier hasn’t changed; we just saw a bigger challenge – a bigger room, a bigger space to tackle,” Theo Jones, a category intelligence engineer at Dyson, told news.com.au at a top secret preview event in Singapore recently.
“As you aim to put more flow through a machine and purify a bigger space, you’re essentially putting more power in, so [you] will get more acoustics out of it.
“We didn’t want that,” he said.
“We wanted to respect the user, because we know in real homes if the noise of the product interferes in what they’re doing, they’re going to turn it off as it’s annoying.
“So it has been acoustically engineered to do the job quietly – even at full power.”
With its clever new cone design, the device – which is priced between $1499 and $1599 – creates two separate air streams that merge together, resulting in a powerful and condensed jet of air that can be projected more than 10m with minimal noise.
It delivers this supercharged air while still filtering out 99.95 per cent of particles as small as 0.1 microns as well as permanently destroying formaldehyde, a colourless gas pollutant released by man-made items like furniture, paint, varnishes and household cleaning products.
Dyson’s all singing, all dancing HEPA filtration system, a technology which first debuted in its Formaldehyde range back in May 2021 and now features heavily across its products – including the newly unveiled Dyson 360 Vis Nav robot vacuum and brand’s first wet to dry vacuum, the Dyson Submarine – also stars in the Big+Quiet.
“Poor indoor air quality is a much-ignored, growing issue,” Matt Jennings, Dyson engineering director in environmental care, said.
“Our home environments can be filled with particle and gas pollution, be it pollen, pet dander, gases from cleaning products and more.
“Each of these particles can contribute to an unhealthy environment, causing potential health concerns.”
However, unlike many of Dyson’s previous purifiers, the gadget doesn’t offer heating or cooling air options, instead introducing a “breezemode” function.
“At its heart, the Big+Quiet is a purifier but we have created breezemode to simulate the wind and cool people,” Mr Jones told news.com.au.
In order to create this function, Dyson engineers spent more than three years collecting 40 million data points to help them recreate a natural breeze at home.
The sensation from seemingly randomised air movement has been scientifically proven to be more refreshing than a stationary jet of air, a phenomenon termed thermal alliesthesia.
“If it is cooling you, and that is something you don’t want in that particular scenario, then you can angle it up and it will still purify effectively,” Mr Jones added.
But if you’re thinking big and powerful equals bulky and unattractive, Mr Jones insists the Big+Quiet is “still good looking”. It also comes in two colours – bright nickel and Prussian blue, priced at $1499.

There’s no precise release date on the new Dyson Big+Quiet Formaldehyde, but the brand said it is due to hit the Australian market in spring 2023.
