As always, we’re taking mental notes when Katie Holmes steps out for one of her signature street-style strolls in New York City. Between her go-to outfit formula made entirely of wardrobe staples (see: all-black-everything with a very good coat) to her serious fashion risks (see: the dress-over-jeans outfit that broke the internet), Holmes is truly the fashion blueprint — and her latest outing was no different.
On Monday, the actress-slash-producer attended the launch of Melissa DeRosa's new book, What’s Left Unsaid, in NYC wearing a look that gave the jacket of the season a brow-raising twist. During the event, she donned a sleeveless, deconstructed sage trench coat dress featuring a buckled belt and a pleated maxi skirt. While fashion-forward on its own, the actress accessorized with another beloved staple that’s been everywhere this season: a pair of black patent leather Mary Janes. Sheer tights, several necklaces, a black shoulder bag, and her signature nose ring provided the finishing touches to the A-lister's look.

The actress rounded out her timeless ensemble by styling her brown hair sleek and straight with piece-y French Girl bangs. As for glam, she opted for a subtle swipe of blush and glossy auburn red lips.
Holmes's appearance comes just a day after she taught us to lean into novelty sweaters for fall. Yesterday, the cashmere connoisseur sported an eye-catching multicolor-patterned crewneck sweater, which she paired with straight-leg black pants. A pair of coordinating black loafers, an oxblood tote, and oval shades rounded out her OOTD.
